Rabbi Gershon Eliezer Schaffel was born, raised and continues to live in
Skokie, Illinois. He received Yoreh Yoreh in 1995 from HaRav Shlomo
Morgenstern shlit”a, former Rosh HaYeshiva in Hebrew Theological College,
and Yadin Yadin in 2009 from HaRav Zalman Nechemiah Goldberg zt”l and
HaRav Chaim Kohn shlit”a, Dean of the Business Halachah Institute (BHI).
Rabbi Schaffel has served as the rov of Young Israel of Skokie since 1996 and
has been a dayan for the Chicago Choshen Mishpat Kollel, led by HaRav Zev
Cohen, shlit”a for over 15 years. He is one of the dayanim who answers
Choshen Mishpat questions for the BHI as well as the halacha hotline for the
Midwest Bais Horaah, headed by HaRav Shmuel Fuerst, shlit”a.
In addition to his rabbinic duties, Rabbi Schaffel has been teaching daf yomi
since 1998, and halacha for the Sarah Hartman Women’s College, formerly
known as Blitstein Teachers Institute since 1999. He has lectured for
numerous shuls and institutions in the Chicago area and around the country.
Rabbi Schaffel is also a seasoned writer. He was a writer and editor for Daf
Digest, a publication dedicated to enhancing the study of Daf Yomi, Mishnah
Berurah Yomi as well as the Business Halacha Weekly. He has also been writing the
“Up for Discussion” halacha column in Circle Magazine since
2020.
In recent years, Rabbi Schaffel developed a deep interest in chinuch with a
focus on assisting families with struggling children. He has lectured at Kesher
Nafshi Shabbatons and events and is one of the rabbonim who answers
shailos for Kesher Nafshi families. This has made him a sought after rov and
moreh derech for families around the world.
